What Is a Live Event Illustrator?
What is a live event illustrator?
A live event illustrator creates bespoke artwork in real time, capturing guests, key moments and the atmosphere of an event as it unfolds. From brand activations, corporate events, beauty and fashion events and product launches to weddings, private parties and luxury experiences, the artwork is created live, allowing guests to watch the creative process unfold.
Live event illustration brings together entertainment, creativity and guest experience. Guests can watch the artwork being created and, depending on the event, may become part of the creative process themselves. This creates an interactive experience that feels personal, engaging and memorable.
Live illustration can take many forms, from illustrated guest portraits and artwork capturing the energy of an event to bespoke pieces created specifically for a brand, product or occasion. It can become part of the event itself, while also creating something unique and personal that can be kept long after the event is over.
What does a live event illustrator do?
As a live event illustrator, I’m there to capture your vision and bring a creative, interactive element to your event. This can be anything from creating live guest portraits to painting a larger reportage-style event painting that captures the atmosphere of the whole as it unfolds.
For live guest portraits, I usually spend around 4–8 minutes with each guest, depending on the style and level of detail selected. I can also work from photographs, which means I can keep painting during dinner while everyone is busy eating, chatting and enjoying themselves.
For me, live illustration is about more than simply creating a beautiful piece of artwork. It adds an interactive and slightly unexpected element to the event, while also giving guests a personal keepsake to take home.
What types of events are live event illustrators booked for?
As a live event illustrator, I’m booked for all sorts of events, from intimate private celebrations to large-scale luxury brand events. No two events are ever quite the same, which is one of the things I love most about what I do.
I’m often booked for:
· Luxury brand events
· Fashion and beauty events
· Corporate events
· In-store activations
· Weddings
· Private parties
· Product launches
· Hotel launches
· Press and influencer events
Live illustration can work beautifully for so many different occasions. Whether I’m creating personalised guest portraits, capturing key moments from the day, or creating a larger reportage-style live event painting that records the atmosphere of the event, I tailor my style and approach to suit the occasion, the setting and the client’s vision.
How can live illustration enhance a brand activation or luxury event?
Live illustration has become increasingly popular at luxury brand events because it offers guests something personal, creative and memorable, while also providing a beautiful way to reinforce the brand.
When I create live portraits at brand activations and luxury events, I can incorporate the brand identity in a few ways.
Branded live guest portraits
I often work on bespoke branded portrait paper and use the brand’s colour palette within my live event portraits, so that every portrait feels completely in keeping with the visual identity of the event. I have created this type of experience for clients including Bang & Olufsen, Louis Roederer, Chaumet, Cartier, Harrods and Cancer Research UK.
Integrating products and brand identity
Branding can also be incorporated more creatively into the live guest portraits. I am sometimes commissioned to design illustrated borders that are pre-printed onto the portrait paper, weaving products, motifs or brand messages into the design. I can also create illustrated collateral ranging from illustrated invitations, illustrated maps and to all other event materials, allowing the visual story to continue throughout the event and ensuring that everything works together beautifully. I have created illustrated collaterals that have worked in synergy with the event live illustration for Paul Smith, Louis, Roederer and Scott Dunn.
Shareable social media brand content
It creates both sharable social media content for the guests, influencers and brands, extending the experience beyond the event.
Beauty illustration
As a live beauty illustrator, I can take this a step further by incorporating the brand’s products into the artwork itself. For example, I have created live guest portraits using Glossier make-up as my artistic medium. For brands including 111SKIN and Jo Malone London, I have illustrated their beauty products directly onto the bespoke portrait paper.
What are the different types of live event illustration?
Live event illustration can take many different forms, and I tailor the style and format to suit the event, the setting and the client’s vision. This can range from individual guest portraits and larger live event paintings to bespoke product personalization and customization.
Live guest portraits
Live guest portraits are created during the event, giving guests the opportunity to watch their illustration come to life. Portraits can be created on bespoke branded paper, using colours, motifs and other details that complement the visual identity of the event.
Live event and reportage painting
For a larger live event painting, my process is to capture the hosts and can include up to 15 recognizable guests within the artwork, while also incorporating elements of the venue, set-up, flowers and any subtly placed branding.
The artwork is completed by the end of the event for all the guests to enjoy and is then gifted to the client for hanging, creating something very special and completely unique to the occasion. The finished artwork can also be reproduced for thank-you cards, emailers and other post-event materials.
Live event customization
Live event customization is particularly popular with luxury brands as a way of creating personalized gifts for customers, guests, press and influencers. Rather than being limited to paper, I can illustrate and personalize a wide variety of products and surfaces.
Some of the materials and products I have worked on include:
· Glass: hand-painted champagne bottles for Hugo Boss
· Leather: an in-store activation for Hugo Boss, customizing wallets, leather suitcases and other leather products with initials and motifs
· Wood: hand-painted hairbrushes for Sisley
· Perfume bottles: personalized for Versace, Moschino and Atkinsons 1799
· Steel: bespoke illustration for Mercedes-Benz
This means live illustration can become part of the product itself, creating a personalized piece for the guest while bringing the brand and the creative experience together.
How much does live illustration at an event cost?
Live event illustrators’ fees vary depending on their experience, the type of illustration required and
the individual event.
My commissions are tailored to each client, with the cost depending on factors such as the length
of the booking, the number of guests, the style and level of detail required, and whether bespoke
branded artwork or materials need to be created in advance.
For London events, my bookings start from a minimum of two hours. For events outside London, I
work on a full-day booking basis, with travel requirements taken into consideration.
For larger brand activations, I can also work with additional illustrators or assistants where
required.
As every event is different, I provide an individual quotation following an enquiry and discussion
about the event.
How far in advance should you book a live event illustrator?
I always recommend booking a live event illustrator as soon as you know your event date. My diary can fill up quickly, particularly during busy event and wedding seasons, so booking early gives you the best chance of securing your date.
For brand activations and events involving bespoke artwork, branded portrait paper or other customised elements, booking in advance also allows plenty of time to develop the creative details and make sure everything works beautifully with the event.
I also regularly accommodate short-notice and last-minute bookings where my diary allows, so if your event is coming up soon, please do get in touch.
What should you consider when choosing a live event illustrator?
When choosing a live event illustrator, the first thing to consider is whether you genuinely love their style. Every illustrator has a different approach, so look through their portfolio and make sure their work feels right for your event, your guests and, where relevant, your brand.
I would also look for:
· A portfolio showing real live events, rather than only studio-based work
· Experience working live and interacting confidently and naturally with guests
· The ability to work quickly while still producing beautiful, recognizable artwork
· Experience relevant to your event, particularly if you are planning a luxury brand, fashion, beauty or corporate event
· Flexibility and the ability to adapt the artwork to complement the event or brand aesthetic
· For brand activations, experience creating bespoke branded materials and customising different products and surfaces
At a live event, the live event illustrator is creating work while guests watch, interacting with people throughout the event, working to a schedule and adapting to everything happening around them.
Ultimately, live event illustration brings together a particular mix of creative skill, speed, confidence with guests, adaptability and the ability to work naturally within a live event. Choose an illustrator whose work you love and whose combination of these skills feels right for your event.
